Symbolism and Meaning of the Color Grey

Grey

There's an entire science about the effects colors have on the physical and mental nature of man. For centuries it's been known that they can alter our perceptions and inner state. Hues are even capable of healing diseases.

Plus, they bear a specific meaning. Colors are peculiar symbols that act as psychological catalysts and are used in numerous systems of influence.

For example, the color grey is loved by workaholics and avoided by those who would rather take it easy. It is a neutral color, with this quality helping it be in perfect harmony with all of the other colors.

Grey has an industrial aspect. It is the most popular element used in the color gamma of offices. It is linked to advanced technologies and industrialization, finding wide-scale since the beginning of the 20th century.

This color has another side to it. Its neutrality is also linked to the absence of emotion. It's characteristic of people who don't like to get involved in events directly but would rather control things from the sidelines, without having to expose themselves to the sometimes dangerous emotional influences posed by others. Hence the term "Éminence grise" (grey eminence), or a person controlling events from the deep shadows.

Color Grey

Serious, moderate, emotionless, cold and quiet - this color is easy to grasp. It calms and suppresses everything vital. It presumes analysis and an atmosphere devoid of emotions. Often it portrays fog, boredom and the dirtiness of large cities. Men like grey more than women. This has to do with the pervading stereotype that a man must never show his feelings, under any circumstances.

Among the positive properties of the color is its psychological neutrality, that sometimes allows the mind to briefly step away from all of the passions it experiences on a daily basis, to rest and think soberly. A negative aspect of grey is that it induces distrust, causes depression and even lethargy.
