The Effects of Aromas on Dreams

Sweet Dreams

Sleep with flowers in your bedroom if you want to have sweet dreams, advise scientists, quoted by the BBC.

Participants, who took part in an experiment were left to sleep in a room full of roses and afterwards admitted that they experienced pleasant emotions in their dreams.

The smell of rotten eggs had the complete opposite effect, no surprise there. Next to be tested will be people who suffer from nightmares.

Boris Stuk and his team from the University Hospital in Mannheim believe that it is possible for aromas to make their dreams more pleasant.

The scientists waited until the participants in the experiment entered the REM sleep phase, when most dreams happen, then exposed them to a strong dose of aromatic air for the duration of 10 seconds and woke them 1 min. later.

After, the volunteers were questioned about their dreams and how they felt after smelling the aroma. It turned out that the emotional moment in the dreams changed depending on the type of stimulation.

Past studies have shown that other types of stimuli, such as sound, pressure or vibration can have an effect on the emotional side of dreams.
