The lowest temperature on Earth's surface has been recorded in Antarctica. Scientists have recorded and announced that coldest temperature on our planet on the ice continent.

The temperature was -144°F (-98°C) and was recorded by a research team led by Ted Scambos from the University of Colorado.

The temperature record was registered via satellite data. The team analyzed 105 temperature readers before declaring it the lowest ever measured on the planet.

Several measurements were taken during the 2004-2016 period, showing that the temperature of the continent plummeted to around -130°F (-90 °C) several times.

Before the Colorado team's discovery, the lowest temperature ever recorded was at Vostok Station in Antarctica. On July 23, 1983, the thermometers fell to -130°F (-89.2 °C).

Among the coldest places on the planet is also the Russian settlement of Oymyakon, where in 1933 it measured a temperature of -100°F (-71.2 °C).

According to unofficial data it had fallen to as low as -120°F (-82 °C) in 1916, making it the lowest temperature ever recorded in a populated area on Earth, as well as the lowest ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere.

Today, the average temperatures during winter drop to -50°F (-45 °C) in Oymyakon, while the only school in the village closes its doors only if the temperature hits below -60°F (-52 °C). There are 500 residents living in the village, most of them deer farmers.
