Puma Punku

The Mystery of Puma Punku

Tiwanaku is an ancient city in Bolivia not far from Lake Titicaca. It is thought to be about 7000 years old and probably one of the oldest cities in the world. Strangely enough, the sculptures there appear to have been built and abandoned much like their far off cousins on Easter island.

Many of the characteristics in Tiwanaku can be found in other early civilizations as well. In the centuries before the Common Era, the same images, forms, motifs and iconography could be seen almost everywhere in Peru. This allows us to see the predecessor cultures.

And while crowds of tourists flock to Tiwanaku, not far from it lies a less frequently visited and much more unfamiliar place for tourists - Puma Punku. It is essentially a field littered with stone ruins, which excite and stimulate the imaginations of ancient astronaut theory supporters.

Puma Punku, located in the high plateaus of Bolivia is indeed considered one of the best proofs of ancient astronauts. Most of the megalithic stone blocks lie on their sides, as if knocked down by a tremendous, unknown force.

The stone blocks are incredibly precisely cut - to the point where they once stood perfectly on top of one another, like the pieces of a precisely crafted puzzle. The closest stone quarry in the region is more than 10 miles away.

The question is how were these colossal stones, some of them weighing more than 100 tons, brought to that location. Keep in mind that the area is at an altitude of 13120 ft (4000 m) above sea level with no trees nearby to use as rollers.

The question facing archaeologists is what purpose was the monument built for. Many of them believe that Puma Punku was built by the Aymara Indians.

But this theory does not hold up because to do this they would have needed planning, description, a way of determining what part goes where and how to put all the pieces together. But the Aymara Indians have never actually had any type of written language.

That which is absolutely striking about Puma Punku is the accuracy and precision with which everything was built. One of the large platforms weighs 800 tons, all of them smoothly polished. Some of them have long grooves with a width of just several millimeters. They are absolutely straight with a perfect uniform depth from one end to the other. Making such with a primitive chisel would have been impossible.

Another intriguing fact regarding the megalithic stones is that they are made of granite and diorite. The only rock harder than diorite is diamond. That means that the only way the site could have been built and the stones cut was by using diamond tipped instruments.
