Robert Durst

Just days ago, American millionaire Robert Durst unknowingly admitted to several murders committed by him, informs Fox News. This curious incident took place during filming for one of the episodes for the documentary series The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. During one of the breaks, while on his way to the bathroom, the 71-year-old rich man forgot that the microphone on his lapel was on and muttered under his nose, "I killed them all of course."

The last episode of the documentary miniseries which included the shocking confession was aired on March 15, with FBI agents arresting Robert Durst the day before on charges of a murder committed 15 years ago.

Naturally, Durst is not the only wealthy man to have decided that he's untouchable and that the laws don't apply to him. The list of millionaire-killers can be expanded with many other names, who at some point or other in their life decided that since you're rich, you can do anything.

Perhaps the most famous millionaire-killer on the list is John Eleuthère du Pont, who in 1996 shot and killed wrestler and Olympic gold medal winner Dave Schultz in cold blood. Du Pont, who is the heir to the third largest chemical conglomerate in the world, shot the athlete because he thought that Schultz was part of an international conspiracy to kill him.

John Du Pont

Months before the murder of the wrestler, du Pont claimed in front of loved ones that he was the Dalai Lama or a CIA agent but no one dared challenge the mental health of the millionaire. The story of the eccentric du Pont seems like a psychological thriller with a tragic ending.

He has even inspired Hollywood producers to re-create the event. The actor Steve Carell played the role of du Pont in the TV miniseries. The millionaire is proven to be guilty but mentally ill as well. He was sentenced up to 30 years in prison and died in 2010 behind bars.

Haissam Safetli was an Australian businessman accused of killing another businessman from Australia - Michael McGurk. The victim was brutally shot in front of his 9-year-old son. One of the attackers was the millionaire in question, while his accomplice was a teenager that he had hired.

The reason for the murder is quite prosaic - Safetli becomes a hired gun in exchange for $300 000. After his capture he helps police by giving out the name of his accomplice and the one who ordered the murder. He was sentenced to just 6 1/2 years in prison.

The millionaire from New Hampshire, John Brooks, can easily be named the most cold-blooded and sadistic killer among his peers. He beat to death a mover with a hammer, suspecting that he had robbed him. For his actions he was sentenced to 2 consecutive life sentences.

The list of millionaire-killers contains no shortage of men, who led by their greed, malice or loathing, have shot their spouses. An example is construction entrepreneur James Ward, who cold-bloodedly shot his wife Diane in 2009.

Millionaire Allen Blackthorn acted just as cold-bloodedly. He didn't pull the trigger himself but hired another person to kill his ex-wife and mother of their 2 children, Sheila Bellush. 5 years after their divorce, Allen paid $54 000 to a group of men to kill Sheila who had given her 2nd husband quadruplets shortly prior to her death.
