While we sleep, our body cleanses itself from toxins, this being yet another function of sleep, state scientists from the University of Rochester.

For long years scientists have been trying to find out what exactly happens to our body while we sleep and recharge our batteries for the next day.

According to some of the latest studies, our brain controls the process of removing toxins during sleep, working similarly to a very precise computer.

Getting a good night's sleep every night is crucial in allowing our body to cleanse itself of as many of the toxins it has accumulated throughout the day as possible.

Brain

People who are unable to get enough sleep for whatever reason feel horrible after waking up and often don't look their best. In addition, they often suffer from headaches.

This discomforting effect occurs when the body has not rid itself of the toxins accumulated throughout the day, and there's no way for it to make up for this and eliminate 2 days' worth of toxins the following night.

According to studies, the brain has a special system for clearing out toxins. It consists of brain cells contracting to make way for a special fluid that washes away the toxins between neurons.

Lack of Sleep

So far, this has not been confirmed by experimentation on humans whether it's 100% true. But studies of various animals - lab mice, rats, monkeys and dogs, have revealed that the process of bodily cleansing of toxins works flawlessly for them when they sleep.

Experts are of the opinion that the expelling of toxins in humans happens the same way - during sleep. Only then does the brain turn on its so-called "cleansing system".

Experts theorize that the accumulation of toxins that are not removed due to lack of enough sleep can lead to problems with brain function.

To protect your body from toxins and allow your brain to work properly, try to set aside enough time for a sound sleep.
