The thumb is the innermost finger of the hand when the palm faces downward. It is the shortest finger and differs most substantially from the rest. You can learn a lot about a person's character from their thumb.
When the hand sits at ease on a flat surface and the thumb is left on the side without any strain, the angle that forms between it and the palm is usually about 60°. An individual where that type of angle forms is quite often calm and patient. They usually show understanding toward everyone.
A person with a greater angle between the thumb and the end of the wrist is distinguished by their strong urge toward independence. They are quite impulsive and have a hard time controlling those impulses.
A small angle between the thumb and the palm is a sign of alienation from others. These types of people act passively toward others and are never 1st to make contact.

If the length of the proximal phalanx significantly exceeds the listed proportions, this is a sign of sincerity and a well developed sense of justice.
A short proximal phalanx bespeaks of a tendency toward reservedness which distorts the natural perception. On the other hand, people with this type of thumb are incredibly patient and consistent.
A person with a graceful and slender phalanx also possesses an enduring mentality and original style. This sort of person is capable of critical judgement and has the makings of one who is spiritually active, but still lacks vitality.
A short distal phalanx is a sign that the person lacks decisiveness and avoids all kinds of problems. This sort of individual prefers receiving instructions, rather than giving them.
A long distal phalanx, on the other hand, reveals an authoritative person or one who tactfully adjusts to the circumstances.
