Archaeologists have made a fascinating discovery in the heart of the Honduran jungle. After decades of studies, they have found the remains of an ancient city believed to have been inhabited by one of the most mysterious civilizations in the world - that of the man-apes.
The ancient civilization of man-apes is not very well known to science but is believed to have existed in antiquity. With the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors, its residents hid as deep in the jungle as they possibly could to escape the invasion of the Europeans.
From the scarce records that researchers have to work with, it is believed that the man-apes had abundant gold deposits at their disposal. The local folklore mentions numerous legends of a heavenly or golden city.
It is theorized that the members of the Honduran tribe worshiped a giant monkey and if we are to further believe the legends, they themselves were half human and half monkey. The tribe's capital was known by the name "The White City".
The search for the lost capital dates back to as early as the 16th century. It was sought after by the Conquistadors of Hernán Cortés but to no avail. It is said that in 1940, the city was found by American researcher Theodore Morde but he died before he could reveal its location to anyone else.
The ruins of The White City have been uncovered by an expedition of American and Honduran archaeologists in the heart of the uninhabited region of Mosquitia. It is known for its swamps, rivers, mountains, dense jungles and fierce mosquitoes.
The expedition was accompanied by armed military units.
The exact location was found by aerial radar scans. They showed scientists that there was a giant architectural complex beneath the jungle canopy.
So far there have been 52 artifacts found above ground but it is thought that many more lie buried beneath the earth. The most remarkable discovery thus far is the head of a man-jaguar.
