The Vilkabamba ancient city in Peru is known among archaeologists as the last refuge of the ruler of the Inca Empire - Manco Inca Yupanqui, after the invasion of the Spanish conquistadors.

Some archaeologists do not identify Vilkabamba as that city, where Manco Inca Yupanqui hid, bu rather Chokekirao, a city known as the Golden Cradle, where there are partially excavated ruins of the Inca Empire in 3085 m altitude. This, however, is debatable.

The area, known as the Vilkabamba, was located on the territory of the modern province of Cusco in Peru and has been renowned for its luxury.

In this city, the ruler of the Inca Empire was hoping to wait for the worst to pass and to bring his people to revolt against the invaders, to expel them from their property. Therefore, he created anew all that was necessary for this purpose and began to prepare for a rebellion.

In 1539, there was a new imperial court and the system of government that existed in Cusco before the invasion of the Spaniards was restored.

Vilkabamba was ruled not only by the Inca ruler Manco Yupanqui but also subsequent Siri Tupac, Cucina Yupanqui the First and Tupac Amaru. At that time, on the territory of the former country of the Inca, which was controlled by the Spanish, Civil War raged.

In 1572, the Spaniards organized a campaign against the ruler Tupac Amaru the first. After the battle, which took many casualties on both sides, the ruler was captured and beheaded, and all his cronies - hanged. The best friend of the ruler was spared to watch his execution and tell about it.

Vilkabamba was known as one of the last centers of the Inca culture, it was completely conquered by the Spaniards, and its riches were totally spoiled. Today, of the ancient city remain only ruins.
