The world's mysteries continue to puzzle us. There are some out there that seem as if they'll forever remain unsolved.
Our planet is vast and wonderful. Even though we turn our gaze to the Universe more and more, Earth contains a vast assortment of unsolved mysteries. And it may take us several more generations at least before we take even one step closer toward solving them.
Debates have continued for years about a number of world mysteries. The theories and hypotheses surrounding them multiply by the moment but none have been able to explain them completely.
Take a look at some of the world's most puzzling mysteries which remain devoid of any logical explanation.
1. The Mummies from San Bernardo
The Colombian town of San Bernardo astounds with its secrets. In 1957 the local cemetery was flooded. When workers began moving the remains they found that all of them were intact, showing no trace of decomposition. They testified before authorities that the bodies were mummified by some natural, inexplicable way. Even their clothes were in good condition.
One theory states that the locals had a special diet. Another points to the region's altitude above sea level. Even if any of these are correct, there's no explanation for why the clothes of the buried have been so well preserved. San Bernardo is the only town in the region with mummified bodies. After their discovery, the mummies were put on display in a museum. No further measures were taken to further preserve them but they remain unscathed by time to this day.
2. The Sibiu Manuscript
In 1961, a document called the Sibiu Manuscript was found. Made in the 1500s, it consists of 450 pages. It details technical specifications regarding artillery, ballistics and multistage rockets. The text explains in detail the launching of a rocket in front of thousands of spectators in the city of Sibiu in 1555. Its author is Conrad Haas. He detailed sketches of rockets of his own design.
In it he also wrote down his ideas about modern-day ideas of spaceships, rocket fuel and delta wings. No one has been able to explain how someone could have written about rockets and spaceships hundreds of years ago.
3. The Lost City of the Kalahari
William Hunt, known by the pseudonym Guillermo Farini, spoke of a mysterious city in November 1885 which he came across in the Kalahari Desert. In his 1886 book he described mysterious rock formations near which there lay ruins of an ancient city.
Over the next several years, there were a number of expeditions sent but all were unable to find anything in the described area. The mystery gradually turned into a myth. The search was renewed in 2016. This time there were rock formations found which matched Hunt's description. For now it remains unknown whether they have any connection to the lost ancient city.
4. The Loretto Chapel Spiral Staircase in Santa Fe
At the end of the 1870s, shortly before the building's full completion, the architect of the chapel in Santa Fe died suddenly. After going over the architectural plan, the builders noticed that there was no planned staircase to lead up to the attic, where the choir was supposed to stand. And since a standard staircase would have been impossible considering the fact that the chapel was too low, the builders found themselves at a dead end. The nuns began praying to St. Joseph the Worker for a period of 9 days.
On the 9th day, there appeared a strange man at the door of the chapel. He told the nuns that he could build a staircase but only if they assured him complete quiet and did not disturb him until he was finished. To do it he promised to use only the materials he carried with him. They agreed and the man worked in solitude for 3 months.
The finished staircase was a beautiful spiral, 22 ft (6.7 m) tall. But there was something strange - it had no nails or columns to support its weight. The nuns were sure that there was no way it could support the weight of the people climbing up it. Surprisingly though, the staircase turned out to be incredibly sturdy. The identity of the man who built it remains unknown.
