Waking Up at Night

If you wake up in the middle of the night and then find it difficult to get back to sleep, it is because you're using the wrong methods - ones that only awaken you further.

There are 2 effective and proven ways which can help you fall asleep again. Find out what they are below and try them out if you find yourself constantly waking up at night and unable to fall back asleep for hours on end.

The mistake most people make is that they immediately grab their phone and check to see what time it is. Then they open up their social networks and the light from their device, paired with other people's posts, only waken them further, preventing sleep.

Not only does this ruin a good night's sleep, it means the next day the person will be lacking the needed energy to be productive and concentrated.

Here are the 2 proven ways which can help you ease into sleep again without letting several minutes of being awake affecting your health and rest.

Insomnia

1. Get out of bed

If you wake up, try to close your eyes again immediately, while breathing deeply. Should you remain awake, don't lay around in bed for long, instead get up and do something calming that would distract you from your thoughts. Don't turn the TV on under any circumstances. In movies and sitcoms, when a character wakes up in the middle of the night, we often see them going to the kitchen and pouring themselves a glass of milk because it has a calming effect on the body. You can also try putting a puzzle together or combing your hair - something that relaxes you.

2. Write your thoughts down

If you wake up with a specific thought or fear, write it down on a sheet of paper. If you've had a nightmare, it's best to immediately write it down instead of thinking about it all night. This will leave you much more relaxed and allow you to fall asleep once again.
