This is the oldest facility of this kind so far found in South America.
Archaeologists have discovered a huge calendar, formed by sculptures arranged in a circle, near Temple of the Fox in Buena Vista, Peru. The calendar, which dates from 2200 BC is the oldest facility of this kind so far found in America, says the Discoverers.
Until now such structures were identified on the territory of civilization from the Mayan in Mexico, however they are aged about 2 thousand years.
Peruvian calendar is represented in a particularly spectacular facility 4 thousand years ago. The structure was plastered with clay mixed with grass in a bright yellow and red. It served as a time for the stars, which was particularly important for agriculture which was the main livelihood in the region.
The main celestial phenomena such as, sunrise and sunset during the equinox and solstice were identified in the form of lines connecting to the entrance of the temple with sculptures and rooms.
In the temple sacrifices were being carried out. Gifts such as cotton, fruit, squash, and beans were used. Archeologists found oysters, crabs and fish in the ruins of the Temple.
No evidence was found for human sacrifices but scientists encountered a mummy of a woman wrapped in cotton cloth lying in the posture of an embryo.
Archaeologists plan to continue with excavations in the summer.
