Scientists have discovered a gene, which may partially be responsible for the level of intellect in humans. The study was carried out by researchers from the Royal Institution in London, under the leadership of Prof. Sylvan Derivieres.
The gene which the scientists have found actually programs the thickness of the surface of the brain, which in turn affects the thinking process and determines memory, as well as the ability to concentrate and learn. This is written within the pages of World Bulletin.
It is believed that this study can give scientists a clear answer about the reason why some people can comprehend and learn better than others, as long as of course, the studies continue in this direction.
1500 adolescents took part in the study - all of them 14 years of age. The experts analyzed DNA samples and scanned the brains of the children. In their next test, the scientists checked the abilities of the participants by giving them written and oral tests.
Scientists focused their attentions on the surface of the cerebral hemispheres - it is known as grey matter. The surface plays a key role in cognitive ability.
Some of the children, who had a specific set of genes, had a thinner surface and therefore displayed worse results when examined intellectually, results showed.
According to the author of the study, Prof. Derivieres, genetic variation is linked to synaptic plasticity or in other words - with the quality of neuronal connections.
This actually points to the idea that genes determine a person's intellectual capabilities to some extent - other genetic factors also play a role in this case.
Last but not least, experts are certain that the environment in which the child grows is also of high significant. It is believed that this discovery will allow scientists the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the biological mechanisms of various psychological disorders, such as autism and schizophrenia.
