Scientists claim that they have found dormant and viable microorganisms in glaciers on Mars. Experts believe that after after being thawed, the organisms will come back to life.
The discovery was made in one of the craters of the Red Planet, which was filled with water that turned out to be warmer than that covering the entire surface of Mars.
The found microorganisms are alive because the water on the inside of the crater remained warm, as opposed to the water covering the entire surface of the Red Planet.
NASA announced their intentions to plant flowers on Mars in 6 years.
Scientists from the American space administration are suggesting that the living organisms be sent with the next Mars rover, which will study the surface of the Red Planet.
The mission of the Mars Plant Experiment will be to study how forms of life from Earth deal with the reduced gravity and higher levels of radiation.
NASA intends to place their greenhouse, containing Earthly air, soil and the seeds of nearly 200 plants on the rover, which will provide water for the plants.
"In order to do a long-term, sustainable base on Mars, you would want to be able to establish that plants can at least grow on Mars, " proclaimed Heather Smith from NASA's scientific team.
The experiment will provide a clear answer to the question of whether or not the colonization of Mars is possible.
"We would go from this simple experiment to the greenhouses on Mars for a sustainable base, " says NASA.
If the experiment is successful, it will be made clear that life on the red planet is possible.
The Mars Plant Experiment will determine the possibility of eventually cultivating plants in greenhouses for future inhabitable Martian stations.
For now the mission is in its early stage. The space on the new Mars rover is quite limited and proposals for 58 devices are being considered, which would travel toward Mars in 2020.
In comparison, Curiosity carried just 10 devices with it, so NASA will hardly actually use all 58 of them.
