Melting of ice in Greenland is accelerating at a worrying pace, alarmed scientists from the University of Utrecht, Netherlands.
Logically, as a result of melting ice the sea level is showing the fact noticeably, according to a survey. The survey team of Dutch, American and British scientists shows that the separation of icebergs and the draining of water due to melting of ice are to blame for the reduction of ice cover.
Within the study space satellites have confirmed that in the period 2006-2008, the melting of ice is equivalent to the accelerated rise in global sea level to 0, 75 mm a year. For comparison: for 2000-2008, the average was 0, 45 millimeters per year.
"The loss of ice has accelerated. Hot summers over the period 2006-2008 are related to the major melting of sea ice, " says study leader Mihiel van den Bryoke.
Scientists are worried that the causes of the ice melting show that this trend will continue in the near future. If all the ice in Greenland melts, ocean levels will rise by 7 meters.
