New geoglyphs have been found in Nazca. The never-before-seen designs came to the fore after powerful winds and an intense storm raged across Peru.
Eduardo Herrán Gomez de la Torre saw the new motifs by complete chance while he was flying over Nazca. According to him, one of the new geoglyphs reaches 197 ft (60 m) in length and 13 ft (4 m) in width. He took a second look at the drawings when the shape of a snake drawn on the ground caught his attention.
The figure is located near the already famous Nazca Bird. Besides the snake, drawings of dragons, birds and strange unknown lines have been found in the area. The archaeologists are remarkably puzzled to find these new geoglyphs, which reveal a great portion of the local history.
"A valuable contribution to our knowledge of ancient Nazca, " stated archaeologist Ruben Garcia Sota, regarding the new find.
The experts are trying to determine if the newly-found images were the work of the Paracas civilization. They cover an area of 174 sq miles (450 sq km) and were most likely made between 500 BC and 500 AD.
The Nazca lines have long excited archaeologists. According to the scientists, these gigantic images portray the idols of our ancient ancestors. Fans of the paranormal think that the geoglyphs were used to mark landing sites for extraterrestrial spaceships.
The unique drawings were made by removing pebbles from ground. Most likely, they have been preserved all this time due to the lack of wind and rain.
The first Nazca lines were found in 1926 by archaeologists Alfred Kroeber and Toribio Mejia Xesspe. According to initial scientific hypotheses, the images were part of an ancient irrigation system, since water is the most important source of life in the Andes.
With time, all kinds of theories emerged about the origins of the lines. A little while later, American archaeologist Paul Kosok hypothesized that the creation of the geoglyphs was the work of a power-hungry priest, who thanks to his knowledge of astronomy was able to manipulate and control the ancient society at the time.
