A number of murders have shocked the world and transformed into a media sensation, while the mystery around them deepens, as even today we don't know with certainty who the culprit was.

Lindbergh Baby

On March 1, 1932, Charles Lindbergh Jr. was kidnapped from his home near Princeton, New Jersey, with a ransom note left on his baby crib, demanding $50 000, a sum unheard of at the time.

A day later, the parents were given the baby's pajamas, with demands for more money, while police was unable to find the perpetrators.

The authorities' delay ultimately cost the life of the little boy, whose body was found in the woods not far from his parents' property. Authorities accused a German immigrant of the crime and even though the evidence against him was circumstantial, he was given the death penalty.

American Tragedy or the O.J. Simpson Trial

One of the biggest court trials involved football legend O.J. Simpson, who was charged with the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Nicole was the victim of domestic violence while living and during the investigation, a bloody sock was found stained with the blood of the football player's deceased wife, in his home. Blood was also found in his car, with eyewitnesses saying that earlier in the day the two had had a serious argument.

But no murder weapon was ever found and O.J. Simpson's lawyers had recorded one of the investigators making racial slurs aimed at the football star. This completely turned the trial around, with the layers claiming the evidence was fabricated and the defendant was ultimately proclaimed innocent.

The Elizabeth Short Case

On the morning of January 15, 1947, young Elizabeth Short's body was found sliced in two at the waist in a vacant lot in Los Angeles. Despite the savage wounds she had sustained, the girl was discovered with a smile on her face.

The body had been thoroughly washed by the killer and positioned with her elbows above her head. There were also 2 1/2″ (6 cm) incisions made across her face. Police suspected about 200 individuals but the true perpetrator was never found.

The JonBenét Ramsey Case

In 1996, JonBenét Ramsey's parents notified police that their daughter had been kidnapped and had found a ransom note demanding $118 000.

A day later, the dead body of the girl was discovered in the basement of her own home, with her parents becoming the primary suspects. The mother claimed that they were at a party during the day and that JonBenét had fallen asleep during the ride home. She had been put in her room without being woken but the next day her parents claimed they could not find her anywhere. No evidence was ever found against them and the case was closed back in 2010.

The Caylee Marie Anthony Case

2-year-old Caylee Marie Anthony was announced missing on July 15, 2008. Her body was found in December of the same year. The first to notify police was Caylee's grandmother, who had been living with Caylee and Caylee's mother, Casey Marie Anthony. She had told investigators that she had not seen her granddaughter in 31 days, while her daughter's car smelled of a decomposing body.

Casey Anthony was accused of the murder of her daughter, changing her testimony several times throughout the investigation. In her final version, she told investigators that it was Caylee's babysitter who had kidnapped her but that Casey was afraid to call authorities.

Casey Anthony was initially accused of first-degree murder but all charges were later dropped.
