Strange signals, originating from a small group of stars in deep space, have been picked up by scientists who believe that an extraterrestrial intelligence is attempting to make contact with Earth, writes the British newspaper The Independent.
Out of the 2.5 million stars observed so far, only 234 have registered this kind of unusual phenomenon. The scientific team can't provide any other explanation for this phenomenon, other than that we're dealing with messages sent by extraterrestrials.
"The signals we picked up match the characteristics we've listed in our earlier research and correspond with this hypothesis, " explain scientists from Laval University in Quebec, Canada.
The fact that the signals come only from a small group of stars within a limited spectral range has led us to think the messages are indeed of extraterrestrial origin, Quebec scientists add.
They were received from a system with a star similar to our own Sun, which can also be seen as proof that life is possible in that section of the galaxy.
The scientists' conclusions are going to be published by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific under the title Signals Probably from Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
But further evidence is needed to confirm the hypothesis.
The plan is to use other types of equipment to search for similar signals, in order to compare all of the various sources and give a categorical explanation.
The scientific program Breakthrough Listen, which has been searching for ET life, announced that the signals are promising and could be used for future communication between humanity and ET intelligence.
Both Steven Hawking and Mark Zuckerberg have expressed their support for the program, with Hawking actively participating in it.
Earlier this year, scientists detected mysterious radio waves coming from the constellation Hercules, which are also speculated to be a signal sent by an intelligent civilization.
