Symbolism and Meaning of the Color Blue

The symbolism of the different colors comes from the associations we make when we look at them. Painters will tell you that blue is a cool color but the association we make when we see it does not relate to anything cold and unpleasant.

Usually we identify it with the sky, sea, cleanliness, air, freedom and truth. Naturally, the various nuances have different associations and symbolism but the sea and sky are typically the first things we think of.

It is said that the color blue is empty to some extent, filled with a sort of peculiar chill and aristocracy as well. What the specific symbols of these associations are we can derive from chromatology (the science of colors).

In Ancient Egypt, blue had a very special place - it was a symbol of the gods, of the truth. After a pharaoh died and before he was mummified, Egyptians would place a blue emerald in the place where his heart used to be.

In Japan, they associate it with death because it is a symbol of mourning. In Christianity, the color blue symbolizes goodness, honesty, virtues.

In modern times, the color blue also has its own symbolism, distinct from the past. For the most part, blue clothes show people that we're self-confident, in a good mental and physical state, that we are fully aware of our abilities and how to achieve what we desire. At the same time, blue is not an arrogant color - it simply makes us look calm and always manages to attract the attention of others.

These are the associations about the lighter shades of blue but if we were to talk about the darker ones, things get a little different. The symbolism of dark blue has to do with power, fortitude and determination. According to feng shui, blue is an excellent choice for meditation, plus it suggests a feeling of mystery, opens our consciousness and lets us feel independent.
