A 5-Year-Old Girl Remains the Youngest Mother in the World

Lina Vanessa Medina

Lina Vanessa Medina is the full name of the girl to hold the record for being the youngest mother in medical history. Lina is from Peru and gave birth during the 1st half of the last century, when she was barely 5 years old. This phenomenon continues to provoke scientific curiosity and lead to new questions.

Lina Vanessa Medina was born on September 27, 1933 in Ticrapo, Peru. When the girl was 5 years of age, her belly began to grow excessively. At first, Lina's parents thought she had been possessed by an evil spirit, later believing that a tumor could be forming in her body.

Ultimately they took the child to a doctor and at that point Dr. Gerardo Lozada, who examined her, discovered that she was 8 months pregnant. Just a month and a half later, on May 14, 1939, the girl gave birth via cesarean section. At the tender age of 5 years and 7 months, she became the mother to a fully healthy boy that weighed 6 lb (2.7 kg).

Interestingly, Lina was sexually mature before she got pregnant. She began having periods while just 2 1/2 years old. At 4 she had developed breasts and at 5 years - fully developed sex organs.

The puzzling case of Lina Vanessa Medina has for years and continues to draw the attention of media and medical experts. It never became known who the mysterious father of her son actually was. It is also unclear under what circumstances the child conceived.

Many years after the event, Lina's father was investigated for sexual abuse. Eventually, the theory of him raping his daughter was dismissed and a new proposal surfaced - that the girl's baby was actually her twin brother, whose cells had become stuck in Lina's womb while she was still an embryo.

A 3rd theory goes that the child became pregnant during an orgy. According to information, such sexual acts during holidays were common in the area where the girl lived.

The baby, which Lina gave birth to, was named Gerardo - in honor of the doctor who delivered it. Despite the strange circumstances under which it was born, it grew up a smart and active child. For years on end, Gerardo believed that Lina was his big sister but at the age of 10 he learned the truth.

Gerardo died at the age of 40, stricken by a bone marrow disease. But doctors are adamant that this health problem was not a consequence of the fact that he was born by a 5-year-old child.
